导演选择克制的艺术方式。现代技术为历史影像注入活力，全彩修复增强视觉体验，画面呈现提升观看维度。但影片不刻意突出技术，整体色调保持沉稳。整体处理注重人文关怀。色彩管理体现历史意识，声音设计追求简约表达。NovelistJosephShearingspecializedinusingrealcaseswhichtookplaceinVictorianEngland,alteringthemforfictionalpurposes.MOSSROSEin1947wasthefirstfilmtobemadefromhisnovels,thenin1948twoofhisworkswereadaptedforthescreen,thisfilmandTHEMARKOFCAIN.ThemoviestarsToddasarecentlywidowedmissionaryreturningtoherhomeinEnglandfromJamaica.Duringthevoyage,shemeetsMilland,acharmingthoughdangerousrascalwhoiswantedbypoliceinconnectionwithsomeunsavorydealings.MillandcontractsmalariawhileonboardtheshipandToddnurseshimbacktohealth.InLondon,Toddsettlesintoherhome,takinginboarderstomakeendsmeet.Millandarrives,movesin,andproclaimshisloveforher.Toddisthrilled,butitseemsratherobviousthatMillandisonlytoyingwithher.Millandfindssomeletterswrittentoherbyherfriend,Fitzgerald,inwhichFitzgeraldrevealssomeofhersexualindiscretions.SinceFitzgeraldisnowmarriedtothewealthyHuntley,MillandbelieveshecanusetheletterstoblackmailFitzgerald.Todd'sloveforMillandissogreatthatshegoesalongwiththeplan.Huntley,however,learnsoftheschemeandalsouncoversdetailsofMilland'sshadypast.Fearingforherlover'ssafety,ToddpoisonsHuntley,thenremainssilentwhenFitzgeraldisarrestedforthemurder.MillandhasbynowgenuinelyfalleninlovewithToddandthetwomakeplanstoleaveEngland.Beforetheycandepart,oneofMilland'sformerloversshowsupandTodd,inajealousrage,killsMilland,thenturnsherselfintothepolice. Thisisanintriguingfilm,althoughalittleonthetalkyside.Theperformancesareexcellentthroughout,withMillandshiningasthecad,thetypeofroleinwhichheexcelled.ThoughhespentmostofhistimemakingfilmsintheUS,heoccasionallyreturnedtohisnativeEnglandforaproductionandthiswashisfirstBritishfilmsinceFRENCHWITHOUTTEARSin1939.DirectorAllenwasalsoanEnglishmanwhochosetoworkintheUS,thisbeinghisfirstdirectorialeffortinhishomeland.ThiswasthefourthandlasttimeMillandandAllenwouldworktogether,theirpairinghavingbegunin1944withthewonderfullyeerieTHEUNINVITED.
